 Sherlock Donnie
« Thread Started on Apr 22, 2008, 3:44pm »

Five AM already? Past actually, as Donatello mouse scrolled the cursor. Popping up the taskbar to see the clock.

Sighing, I'll go to bed... eventually, mentally repeating to himself for maybe the tenth time in around the past four hours.

Yet surely his task look precedence over sleep. Cross referencing and patterning searching the museums hit in the at least past two weeks. Rare enough when museum was lifted but this many? And, from what could be found in the police reports, the tactics and evidence--found or not--at the scene of each crime. Yet even without replays from the security cameras at each crime there was little doubt as to who was behind it all.

And that made what Karai said all that more chilling; what she said about revenge and "familiar faces" piercing all that more deeply.

Just how many times do we have to do this? Fingers twitching. Hands slowly clenching. No matter how many times--he just... he just...

I'll go to bed... eventually, palming his face with a tired sigh.

"Took how long for someone to bundle that feature?" Donatello mumbled with the cereal in his mouth. Breakfast in the afternoon.

"Had it coded on my browsers for years," spoken more matter-of-fact than of arrogance. But nonetheless he felt proud of himself for that, along with distributing a prototype, add-on version before other web browsers picked up on it and packaged it in their version updates. A neat little feature: a computer shuts down without closing the web browser, next time the web browser boots up you'll view whatever pages or sites you were last looking at.

Quickest way to continue his sleuthing from last night, or this earlier morning as it were. Better than having to go through the history index and trying to figure out which pages he was viewing last. Bookmarking was likely out of the question--he needed to organize that bookmark folder one of these days. Maybe set up personal bookmark folders for each member of his family while he was at it.

"I hope April can be of any help," installing a new ink cartridge into the printer with one hand and tipping the bowl of cereal into his mouth with the other.

"No wait!" Rolling his chair over to a desk drawer and shuffling through it. In moments he snatched up a tiny keychain. Attached to it was a micro flash drive, about as thin as the USB port and about the size of a human thumbprint.

"Much easier," plugging the device in and loading files onto it. Hopefully, with April's help they could deduce which museums would be targeted next and which specific items were on the perpetrators' shopping list.

While Donatello was busy investigating on the internet, April had been tossing and turning all night. Admittedly, she was worried about this investigation she was under. Parker was a smart cop, very shrewd and, even worse, very sharp.

Least to say, April didn't sleep very well and decided to close shop early to go and talk with the boys. She couldn't share her concern with Casey, he was still off on that excursion he decided to take about a week ago. So, she figured she'd just go to the Lair and present the problem, maybe ask the boys to lay low for a bit so this whole investigation thing could blow over.

April slid down the manhole and made her way to the Turtle's Lair. A rat scurried across her path, she inhaled sharply, then relaxed. You'd think that she wouldn't be afraid of them anymore, but old habits were hard to break. She wasn't as scared of them as she used to be, but she definitely didn't fancy them.

Without knocking, April went into the Lair; April just didn't bother to knock anymore, not after all these years. Donatello was sitting at the breakfast table, looking as though he was about to fall asleep face first into his cereal. Sitting down in the chair across from him, she leaned forward and rested her weight on her elbows on the table.

"We have a problem." She informed Donnie, waiting for him to draw himself out of the stupor he was in.

It looked like April wasn't the only one who didn't get much sleep last night.

"Uh..." Donatello took a moment to ponder when April had even arrived, "yeah," upon finally acknowledging she was there then sluggishly looked at into his cereal bowl.

"My cereal is soggy," holding up the spoon at eye level, allowing April to inspect it herself if she wanted to crane over. "Long lasting crunch?" A skeptically rhetorical question as he slid the spoon into his mouth.

There then came a mumbled string of words from Donatello's mouth. He turned to point at the computer while he did. There was a pop-up in the center of the monitor's screen. Papers flying into a folder.

Still downloading he noted.

Donatello swallowed and got out of his chair. Began walking over to the computer terminal with cereal bowl in hand.

"I've noticed it too," assuming April was wracking her brain around the same problem as he was currently.

"Yeah, I have," sitting down at the terminal. "In fact, I planned on coming to you with the files once they finished. I figured your background and expertise when it comes to museums, artifacts and the like could connect the dots quicker than I can."

April looked at Donnie, puzzled.

"What? Donnie, did you sleep at all last night?" April asked him, her tone concerned.

"I don't think we're talking about the same problem..." April added on.

She continued: " Let me clarify, I'm being investigated by some cop. He was under the impression that I was in alliance with the Foot. I showed him that I wasn't....but I don't think he'll stop there. He's one of those people that once they're presented with a puzzle, they never stop trying to solve it until they know everything. He's going to keep investigating me until he finds something on me, I'm just worried about that something being the five of you."

She took a deep breath and sighed, rubbing her temples. She could try to throw him off the trail, but he would notice. He would probably check the police reports from when the Foot raized the shop to the ground a few years ago, but that may not be enough. April thought, maybe staging herself as a target of the Foot simply because she attempted to expose them might throw him off the scent.

But maybe he would know that a few articles and news reports would not be enough to force such a large clandestine organization to go after one woman simply because it was an inconvienence.

Who would ever have thought that April would have to fall into her old reporter shoes?

Which begs the question: how do you get a detective with the mind of a reporter to mistrust his gut?

"Please," Donatello suddenly began. It was as if he was suddenly stabbed when his eyes peeled open.

"Please tell me Casey wasn't there," not that he didn't trust their vigilante friend. It was just he had doubts of Casey properly handling such a sudden situation without April trying to puppet him. Who knows what could have accidentally slipped in such an informal interrogation. "That would so not be good for us..."

A sigh of relief took Donatello when April assured him otherwise.

"Hopefully he hasn't talked to Casey yet." Believing, that if what April told him about this cop is right, he'll be sniffing around Casey soon enough. Surely he'd have to, right?

"Do you think we can use Casey?" he asked. "Have him be the goal your new friend is reaching for--it's not like Casey hasn't been fighting the foot before and he was there most of the time with us. If you're backed into the corner and finally have to answer you can just swap the five of us with Casey in our stead."

"Problem solved like that?" He hoped but shrugged all the same though he was sounding worried himself now. "At least it's a start and a quick idea--our failsafe if we can't come up with anything better... huh?"

April took a deep breath, rubbing her temple, and closing her eyes.

"I don't know, I'd have to ask him. I don't think Parker has talked with him yet, but I could be wrong. Parker's only listed address for Casey is my apartment." April paused for a moment, when Donnie asked about using Casey as a decoy.

"I'm sure he'd be willing to, but I don't want to set him up for something without his input on it first." She opened her eyes smiling a little. "Though I'm sure Casey will come up with something elaborate and theatrical."

"The only problem is that, well, Parker is very intuitive. If something, just something doesn't strike right with him, he'll dig deeper."

April ran her fingers through her hair, and her smile turned into a rueful one.

"Parker is a reporter stuck in an Investigator's body. He won't stop until he's figured out every angle." She sighed again. "It's been a while since I worked as a journalist, but I may be able to spin a story that will throw him off."

April's conversation with Parker yesterday proved that she was no longer at the top of her game. She'd spent too long without having to explain things away.

Times had changed.

"I really think you are giving this person too much credit," Donatello rolled his shoulders, almost yawning.

"We're not just gonna show and tell this guy it was Casey outright. We just arrange the trail of crumbs in such a way that it leads to Casey. Yet in doing so, we try to redirect him from Casey, making it look as if his end goal is Casey. And when he finally comes to his goal and conclusions--viola--it was Casey! Not four mutant turtles and a rat," nodding in certain as if it would work. But uncertain as to how. At least at the moment.

"Problem is orchestrating this flawlessly," suddenly seeming doubtful.

"But I'm certain we can figure something out," he then said.

"Can you think of any other possible leads he could and has yet to look through we could manipulate or erase? Or just prepare for?" Rubbing a temple. "What do you think he'll probably do next?"

April ran her fingers through her hair yet again.

"The idea has merit, Donnie. But it would have to be executed flawlessly. I mean no slip ups, no loop holes, not even one piece of planted evidence that could possibly indicate that not all of the puzzle pieces fit."

April stood and walked around the table, taking a seat on the ledge of the counter. She leaned back, her eyebrown slightly knitted, nose just a little wrinkled, it was April's think tank look.

"One mistake, one faulter, and we would be in a world of trouble."

She looked at Donnie.

"I realize that you think I am underestimating our intelligence, but I would rather overestimate this man then underestimate him."

April had been with the boys for a long time, and what she had noticed in her time with them was that many of their enemies made the mistake of underestimating them; for many of those enemies it was their downfall.

If April was going to have to scheme against someone, she wanted to make sure that she thought they were a bloody genius rather than an average joe.

Still, there was always the possibility of making a mistake...

"Then maybe you should start just estimating him, or I guess calculate him as the case may be..." Donatello assessed the concern coming from April. She honestly had a right to be concerned, but Dontalleo just was not feeling it. Being unwittingly sought after, even found out was just something difficult for him to suddenly comprehend at times. It was more of a possibility. An actuality however was rather surreal after remaining hidden for so long and after such... occurrences in his and his family's life.

Inhale. Donatello fingers began tapping on his thighs. Lips puckered and he exhaled.

"Alright then," he began as if coming to some conclusion. "Since the others aren't around at the moment, maybe we should just fill them in later. For now we can decide on a first step to take on handling this guy--and maybe," coming up with a further idea, his mind returning to something else he had on his mind before hand.

"Somehow we can tie this into it," rapping a knuckle on the computer screen. "There has been a rash of museum thefts as of the late--I want to believe--in fact I know it is the Foot somehow involved in this. Certainly there's someway to deal with both birds with the stone in our hand, right?"

April sat back again, looking tired and mentally exhausted.

"I don't want Casey to be caught stealing in a museum. But maybe, just maybe, if we can predict the Foot's next target, Casey and I could drop Parker a hint and play vigilante against the Foot. That may be just enough to let Parker know we're not in league with them, and leave little enough evidence so he can't arrest us for it."

April stretched, yawned and leaned forward again, elbows on the table.

"Or maybe we should just wait until the others get back to formulate a better plan." She paused."In any case, this will have to be very elaborate, but not enough to make him think it was planned. Again, I really don't want to underestimate him. We have to deal with him like we're dealing with....well, with me."

April wasn't trying to blow her own horn, she was just trying to remind Donetello that this Parker character was going to be one cool customer.

"Mi casa es su casa," Donatello said. "You know the drill and might as well get comfortable. Splinter's off meditating and the guys are elsewhere--who knows when they'll be back unless you want to call them in on the shell cell," rolling his shoulders back in a shrug.

Normal people are given one problem at a time, he thought while leaning back into his chair, lackadaisically sweeping his foot back and forth. Why do our problems always come in threes?

"Until then," speaking up, "I think I'm just gonna get started on the Foot's museum capers and which ones will likely become their next targets. Let alone how they're pulling them if--somehow--if possible."

Donatello then interjected, "And for the record... I'm willing to believe you, even take your admonishment, that we should not underestimate this cop. However, I will continue to remain skeptical that he is anything like you until further evidence can be revealed." He smiled at her. "Black holes eventually evaporating I can understand as plausible but the universe birthing another you?"

April laughed at this comment.

"As if one of me wasn't bad enough."

April moved from the chair.

"Donnie, how about we get to work on those files you mentioned earlier. I can help you compile them, maybe help you figure out a pattern. See what the Foot is up to."

Something was nudging her in the back of her mind. It was about Shredder. Shredder had always reminded April of Hitler in some ways. He was obsessed with magic and talismanic artifacts. No doubt that he was insane, but something that Karai said. Something about old friends.

Not that Shredder was ever a friend, and regardless of whether or not Karai had assisted with the Generals, April still didn't consider her a friend at all.

So why all the museum robberies? Why the new investigation?

Why couldn't things just stay normal?

Oh yeah, because she was friends with four mutant ninja turtles and a mutant rat.

"That works well enough for me, April," Donatello's mood somewhat lightened.in spite of daunting circumstances that were aligned against him and his family.

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with but a single step," he said resigningly, "as Splinter would say... and now that '1,000 Miles' song is stuck in my head--brilliant,'" he huffed.

"But before we start," moving across the lair's main space towards a messy, makeshift worktable on the edge of his open space workshop. Donatello began shuffling his hands around and about his gadgets, doo-dads, doo-hickeys, thingamabobs, whachamallits, whatchamawhozits and other titles to help convey the geekishness, complexity and eccentricity of items in various states of completion or repair created by his hands.

"I know I had it around here somewhere," he muttered, then, "AH, here it is!" Holding up his shellcell--a cellular phone shaped, of all things, much like a turtle shell. Next, Donatello flipped the open the shell's top, revealing a second screen and typepad he then immediately began pressing at.

"Before we get started, I might as well text the others that you think we may have another snoop on our hands," still pressing away at the keys in a steady, rythmic pace. "And they can always be filled in on the details later, as needed.

"But for now, April, you may want to get settled. I've collected as much data as I could and it's a lot."

April sighed, a slight, rueful smile playing across her mouth. There wasn't much else they could do right now anyway. Donetello was right, worrying wasn't going to get them anywhere, only action. And the only thing that could be done for the moment was to quickly brief the boys over the shell phone. Other than that, all they could do was to get going on anything else that may prove to be a future problem.

Like the foot breaking into museum after museum.

"I hope Casey is back. We've got a long night ahead of us and it would be nice to come home to some kind of dinner...even if it is a half-effort."

April stood from her place at the table and stretched, cracking various joints in the process.

Hands then rubbed together in a mildly eager fashion, April's eyes alight with the prospect of a new puzzle to solve.

"Throw some of those lists at me, Donnie, let's get cracking."
